This summer, I am spending some time ‘un-employed’ as I prepare everything for my private clinic. I’ve been home with my boys, currently aged 8 and 10. Most of the parents reading this who have spent long summer days at home with the kids know that sometimes this is joyful and sometimes, it’s survival mode.
I’ve been trying to find beauty to enjoy every day. It isn’t always something expected – I always enjoy the blooming flowers cropping up around my new home. But there are other things.
On the little boat given to us by the neighbors, a tiny plant grew from a tiny hole.
The taste of warm, ripe fruit right off the plant.
The ecstatic, bounding energy of my pup when he realizes that I am coming outside with him.
The silly laughs with my boys at dinner time, about… nothing in particular.
And a few weeks ago taking a late-night walk with a friend, the forest was enchanted with fireflies – more than I have ever seen in my life. It was breath-taking.
Sometimes, we care for our soul by finding simple beauty. Enjoying where we are. It isn’t always easy, but it is always worth it.
Where, lately, have you found unexpected beauty?
